Stuck in traffic
Thursday, October 26, 06
Coming from a city, the "one road" concept is a challenge. Highway 101 is the "one road" along the coast, west of the Coast Range mountains, linking all of the towns from Astoria south. When there is a landslide, flood or accident, traffic is re-routed (if possible at all) in a round-about, long-way-home detour.
Currently Sunset Highway 26 is undergoing some construction projects and is the most direct east/west route between the coast and Portland (and Hillsboro and Beaverton and I-5, etc.) The other two are 30 miles north along the Columbia River and 45 miles south to Tillamook. Waits during peak times run 15 to 30 minutes, much to the chagrin of many drivers according to the flagger who stopped me today. I happened to be the FIRST car in line this trip, so, while waiting for the pilot car to arrive with the eastbounders, I rolled the windows down, turned the engine off and took a look around.
I've been stuck in traffic in worse places...
