Earth Wind Water
Saturday, April 21, 07
This weekend (Earth Day weekend) Cannon Beach is celebrating its environment with the Earth, Wind and Water Festival. There are few places more dramatic for these elements to meet than Cannon Beach's icon, Haystack Rock. At 263 feet tall, it is the third largest monolith in the world. It is also a protected wildlife sanctuary, a designated marine garden and home to seagulls, cormorants and the beloved puffin (though they are struggling with a mysterious fatal illness this year.) Bald eagles also make regular appearances that send the seagulls into a frenzy.
As on most days at low tide, volunteers from the non-profit Haystack Rock Awareness Program were out in force, pointing out birds and other Rock creatures, answering questions and making sure that visitors and inhabitants stayed safe.
