Rockaway Revisited
Friday, June 08, 07
As promised. I returned to funky little Rockaway Beach. Large, dangling mobiles caught my eye, and I met Cat (who is a musician) and whose husband creates the "Du Drops" by filling recycled light bulbs with Oregon rain that they've collected throughout the years. Her story about why he began making them and how she met him was beautiful. So glad I detoured.
I sought out the old style cottages along the beach road. Now these are real beach bungalows--crusty and a little rough after decades of sea spray and winter after winter of 70 mph winds, a little faded from more than 10,000 sunsets. I could see myself in one of these retreating for the weekend and hosting happy hour on Fridays. There's a comfort and nostalgia here that I haven't felt in other places. Think Route 66. Who calls a cabin "Water Lily" anymore?
"What would you do if you won the Lotto?" I ask myself more often than I should. Today, I decided, that after purchasing the winning ticket, my next purchase would be one of these little cottages. Not to tear down and build a McMansion (which is probably what will happen to most of them soon,) but to preserve and protect and savor future summers as the experience of summers gone by.

I often wonder what the draw is to the " McMansion"? In just the short three years we have been coming to the beach I have notice the number of these small cottages being replace with the "Mc Mansion" ...and it's a real shame... but I guess Money talks ..
ps. I bought my lotto ticket... so I think I'll put a down payment on the little white Cottage..
