Storms

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

Today we are experiencing "a storm that wasn't."  For days forecasters have been predicting gloom and wind from a "huge" storm off the coast.  On the satellite the storm did look enormous as one weather man described it as "as large as the whole state of Oregon."  We on the coast prepped for 60 mph winds as the waves intensified.

When I shot this photo we were still anticipating the landfall in late morning.  Hotels were deluged with walk-ins eager to experience some early storm watching.  Then the wind picked up...and died down.  There was a downpour...then sprinkles.  After a few paltry attempts at gusts, the wind is now all but calm.  It is, however, wet outside, but that is supposed to diminish overnight.  Apparently the storm took a different direction, and we only got the edge.  All that hype and drum beating for nothing.

Tonight I read through an old notebook/planner and came across something I'd written years ago.  It startled me because the pain was so evident in the description of what I'd gone through and, now, have gotten over.  My life was full of storms, but when I wrote those bleak paragraphs, I had no idea that life would take a turn, and I'd be here and that I'd be doing this.

In The Power of Now--the gist of which is to stay always in the present moment--the past is gone and only really serves to show us patterns and lessons.  The future isn't here yet, so we can have no idea what will show up during the next year, week or hour.  My past has taught me NOT to trust weather predictions.
