Standing Stones

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

On my way to Silver Point this morning, a friend said that the sculptures were back.  There is an "unknown" artist who periodically provides incredible towers of rocks positioned on other rocks.  Some are a foot or so high, many are two or three feet.  They are always at Silver Point.

This was a true sculpture garden to be viewed and contemplated as a whole and individually.  One totem seemed about colors;  another had a small "bird" perched at the top.  I don't know how long they've been there, but will probably be memories by week's end with rain arriving.  They had at least survived last night's tides and creatures.

Who is this person?  The patience and focus and vision for each, selecting the rocks, placing them one on top of another.  Going through this painstaking process knowing that it is all only temporary.  Someone else told me this artist makes them as "stress relief," engulfing and focusing his mind on creating to ease pain somewhere in his daily life. (And there, I've just described art.)  This concerned me because there are so many sculptures this time.

I wish him well.  What a special place he's created, giving us all a chance to get away and re-focus.
