A Little Time Out
Sundays, when possible, are “time out” days for me.
When I lived in Rochester, I would bustle Scooter, and, later on, Cassy off to our weekly dog walk in Webster Park. As an aside, dogs know what day it is. I could walk Cassy six days a week, but if we weren’t out of the house by 9:00 am Sunday (because of heavy rain, wind or 3 degree temps,) she paced in front of me until I took her out to the car. She lived all the rest of the days to get to Sunday.
After the walk I would pick up a Sunday paper or two, get something for breakfast and head home for an afternoon of old movies. At the coast, I walked Cassy every morning anyway, but would change direction on Sunday and walk north to Surfcrest Market for the paper.
Today I’d planned to take some photos at a Community Fall Fest hosted by Ohio University’s Eastern Campus outside of St. Clairsville. It was fine. There was a car show, lots of stuff for kids; the Fabulous Bender Boys played their brand of country/crossover/bluegrass. My parents took their lawn chairs to listen to them for a couple of hours.
Then I went to Barkcamp, where I’ve been spending some Sunday afternoons. Now that vacation season is over, for the most part, the camp is quiet. It sprawls out around a reservoir/ lake with trails, an archery range, canoe rentals, several picnic areas, a beach and an interactive walking path. Sometimes I hang out and read; sometimes I walk. Sometimes I drive the meandering roads that remind me---I may have mentioned---of Mendon Ponds.
At some point I’ll hang out at the “Horse Camp.” Today I must have counted nearly a dozen horse trailers driving by, as well as four horses and riders casually loping along the road. It’s nice to see. And, yes, some people camp and bring their horses—who knew? But they also bring them from farms here and there for Sunday walks down wooded trails and a little time out of their own.
