Christmas Postcards
Friday, December 24, 2010
‘Tis the season. In these parts, holiday decorations have always been big. My mother talks about my grandfather building light displays every year—and winning ribbons for them. The “Festival of Lights” at Oglebay Park is a huge attraction where lines of cars wind their ways through several miles of park roads, oooh-ing and ahhh-ing at glittering roadside and hillside bling lighting up the nights.
These “picture postcards” are more subdued. From Victorian oppulence to the most humble touch, the same spirit of the season is within all. The buildings are in Wheeling, WV, most close to the Center Market district. When I win the lottery--after the usual paying off bills and gifting family, charities and friends--I hope to buy several pieces of real estate. Obviously I hope to hit the big one. Possibly I would buy something along these blocks and adopt a greyhound from the Wheeling Island track. Oh, those sugarplums.
Happy Holidays to everyone. I miss my friends. Wish you were here.
